- Nolan Ryan was one of
- the toughest pitchers to
- hit in the history of
- baseball. "The Ryan

-

- trouble controlling.
-
- He started his major league career with the

- season of the ΓÇ£MiracleΓÇ¥
- Mets team that upset the
- Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series.
-
- Nolan struggled with his control early in his
- career. (He led the league in walks eight
- times.) The Mets grew frustrated with him and
- traded him to the California Angels in 1971.
-
- With the Angels, NolanΓÇÖs career took off. He
- led the American League in strikeouts 11
- times, fanning a record 383 in 1973. He later
- joined the Houston Astros as a free agent
- and then finished out his career as a
- member of the Texas Rangers. Nolan
- won the ERA championship twice, led
- the league in shutouts
- three times, won 20
- games twice, and was an
- eight-time All-Star.
-
- Nolan pitched for a record 27 big-league
- seasons, more than any other player in
- professional team sports. He finished his
